One of the great things about church is that it is for
everyone. Whoever you are, you are welcome. The church is for people of all shapes and sizes. That is why it is often good to talk about
the church family. Families have people
of all ages. Families enjoy variety.
But in our age of increasing targeting, perhaps there
is another angle to take. Of course, it
remains true that the church is for everyone.
If we are going to engage in effective mission, we, certainly sometimes,
need to do things that will help us engage with particular groups. As Michael Moynagh points out: "Church
no longer has the option, if it ever had, of relating to people as if they were
all the same. ... Contextualising the
church is the attempt to be church in ways that are both faithful to Jesus and appropriate
to the people the church serves. .... Churches
will look different because they are engaging with different people"
("Church for every Context").
Of course, every church should be open to whoever may
come - but let's look out for any particular missions to which God is calling
us!
